How to Make an Online Poll People Actually Answer
Write a poll question that gets votes, pick the right settings, share it where your audience is, and know when you need a form instead of a poll.

A poll is the fastest way to get a decision out of a group. One question, a few answers, one tap to vote. But a vague question or a confusing set of answers gets few votes and muddy results. Here is how to make a poll that people answer, and what each setting is for.
1. Write one clear question
A good poll question asks about one thing and can be answered in a second. Compare:
- Weak: "Thoughts on the offsite and the new schedule?" (two questions, no clear answers)
- Better: "Which week works best for the offsite?"
Keep it under about 15 words, avoid leading wording ("Don't you agree that..."), and say what the vote is for if it is not obvious, for example "For Friday's lunch: where should we go?".
2. Give answers that do not overlap
Each answer should be short and clearly different from the others. Ranges must not overlap: "1-5" and "5-10" leaves the person who means 5 stuck. Two to six answers is the sweet spot. More than that and people skim instead of choosing.
If none of your answers might fit, add an escape hatch such as "Other" or "None of these". Without it, those people either skip the poll or pick something they do not mean, which skews the result.
3. Pick the right settings
Single or multiple answers
Use a single answer when you need one winner: a venue, a name, a yes or no. Allow multiple answers when you are collecting availability or preferences, such as "Which days can you make?" or "Which topics interest you?". With multiple answers, read the results as "how many people picked this", not as percentages that add up to 100.
Show or hide results
Seeing live results makes a poll more fun, but it also creates a bandwagon effect: once one answer leads, later voters drift towards it. If you want honest first choices, for example for a team decision or a quiz, hide the results until the poll closes.
One vote per person
A no-login poll cannot verify identity, so it limits voting per browser instead. That stops casual repeat voting. Some tools also offer one vote per network, which is stricter but blocks everyone who shares Wi-Fi, like a classroom or an office. For anything that needs verified, auditable votes, such as an election or a paid competition, use a tool where voters sign in.
How long it stays open
A deadline gets votes. "Closes Friday" prompts people to act now; an open-ended poll gets forgotten. For quick team decisions, a day is enough. For community polls, a week.
4. Share it where people already are
- Chat: paste the link in Slack, Teams, WhatsApp or Discord with one line of context.
- Meetings and classes: put the link on a slide or turn it into a QR code, then show the live results on screen.
- Email: one link at the top of the message, with the question repeated in the subject line.
- Social media: post the link with the question as the caption, and pin it while voting is open.
Send one reminder before the poll closes. Most votes come in right after a post and right before a deadline.
5. Read the results honestly
Look at how many people voted before you look at percentages. "75%" from 4 votes means three people. If the result is close or the turnout is low, treat it as a hint rather than a decision, or run a quick second round between the top two answers.
Make your poll in under a minute
The formvoxo poll maker is free and needs no account for you or your voters:
- Type your question and answers.
- Choose multiple answers, hidden results, one vote per network and how long it stays open.
- Press Create poll to get a share link for voters and a private manage link for you, where you can watch results and close the poll early.
Polls are deleted automatically when they close, so nothing lingers.
When a poll is not enough
Polls are perfect for one quick question. When you need more, such as names and email addresses, open-ended feedback or several questions at once, you need a form. With formvoxo you can build that form in plain HTML on any website. Every response is emailed to you and saved in your dashboard, with spam filtering included, and paid plans add CSV export and file uploads. The docs show how to set up a feedback or survey form in a few minutes.
